With the completion of the the exterior renovation, the committee is now organizing work on the building's interior.
Last year the pews were moved to safe storage, and volunteers removed all the plaster walls and ceilings. Carpenters came to straighten and level the ceiling rafters and joists.
Another crew built a new chancel at the front of the church and volunteers installed wiring throughout the structure.
One Saturday in May volunteers prepared the walls for the spray-on foam insulation which gives them strength and made them impervious to insects and moisture. Drywall was professionally installed and workmen added fiberglass insulation to the ceiling. Finally, carpenters added new flooring around the interior perimeter of the building.
This Summer:
Over the summer, the floor will be sanded and painted, new wainscoting will be added to the walls and the windows will be trimmed out. If grants or contributions are received, the chancel will be carpeted.
Refinishing the pews has proved to be a challenging project. The undercoat applied in the 1860's has proven to be nearly impossible to remove. The committee is now researching alternative ways of refinishing those sturdy wooden benches.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the rennovation or contributed financially to the project.
Contributions welcome:
The slowing economy has had an effect on our grant writing activities. Contributions from individuals continue to be a major source of revenue for this project. Several grants from the Dane Country Cultural Affairs Commission and the Bryant Foundation in Stoughton have made much of the rennovation possible.
